Post-Thanksgiving Detox

Hello there!  The holidays are now in full swing and I'm sure that many of you, like myself, overindulged this past week.  Between two Thanksgivings, buffalo wings and the most insanely amazing sandwich I've ever eaten on date night that was literally the size of my face, it's time to reign things back in.

Enter this peanut butter *detox* shake.  I don't believe in traditional detoxes, cleanses or pills.  Your body has it's own detoxification system, also known as your liver and kidneys, which help to break down and expel toxins that you encounter.  My idea of a detox is to fill your body with nutrient dense foods including plenty of fruits and vegetables.  The easiest way to remember what to eat is the more colors the better. Why?  The more colors you encounter means the more antioxidants, phytochemicals and vitamins and minerals you'll encounter.  

So, now that Thanksgiving is over, I'm giving my body a much needed break and eating clean for a few days.  I decided to start with this shake.  The good news?  The taste is so rich and creamy, that you would never guess the ingredients...!

Here are the contenders.  Bananas, an excellent source of potassium and also vitamin C, add the creaminess to this shake.  Soy milk adds protein, calcium & vitamin B 12 (make sure it's fortified!).  Ground flaxseed is high in fiber but also omega 3's -  Chia seeds are not only rich in omega 3's and fiber but also contain zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium. I went with powdered peanut butter as traditional butter is higher in fat, albeit healthy fat, but I wanted to keep the calories low.    

*Tips for success*
1. Make sure to purchase ground flaxseed, your body can't break down the whole seeds, meaning if it's not ground, you'll be missing out on valuable omega 3's!
2. Feel free to swap out cow's milk for soy or regular pb for powdered pb - let me know in the comments how it works.



Peanut Butter Banana Detox Shake

Ingredients

1 large banana, frozen
2 tbsp flax seed, ground
1 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp powdered peanut butter
3/4-1 cup soy milk
4-5 large ice cubes

1. Add first 5 ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend on high.
2. Add 4-5 large ice cubes, blend on high until desired consistency is reached.
